Why We Love It
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso combines utility with a sleek and elegant Art Deco exterior that has become an icon of design.
Along with the Cartier Tank, the Reverso’s rectangular case is perhaps the most distinctive silhouette in horology.
Presented in stainless steel, this particular example is the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1931 Duoface. Virtually unworn, it sports a clean silver dial with heat blued touches throughout. Understated and elegant - reminiscent of the first examples from the 1931.
The reverse side is black Clous de Paris guilloché, giving the watch an evening wear twist that is nothing short of debonair. The hands are fashioned in the same sword shape as on the front dial, but with SuperLuminova for those times when a little extra visibility is needed. A day night indicator is made available as well, a noteworthy addition lest we forget that all of the parts are fashioned in the Grand Maison's Vallee de Joux facility.
There are homage watches and reissues - and then there is timeless design.
This Reverso is most certainly the latter.
The Story
In 1931 Jaeger LeCoultre created the ultimate watch for the sporting gentleman: the Reverso. The watch was every bit a dress watch that could be worn with a suit while showing the front of the dial. However, by simply flipping it over with their unique patented system, one could protect the watch for polo playing by snapping in the solid metal case back.
JLC brought back these Art Deco masterpieces with exacting attention to detail and captured both the spirit and mechanical prowess of the originals.
They captured the minimalist essence in this ultra thin model and still provided for a small seconds at 6 o'clock, contained in a small railroad marker box. The symmetry and simplicity was enhanced further by plainly presented Arabic numerals.
What's more is that JLC managed with their in-house production to provide a precious metal case in 18k white gold at a scant few thousand dollars more than the stainless steel equivalent. This is for the gentleman who is as thrifty as he is sporty!
